A new case of the lethal H5N1 bird flu was confirmed in the central Polish
city of Lodz, the country's General Administration of Animal Quarantine said
Wednesday.
The new H5N1 case was detected in a dead swan, which was found on the wetland
of the city's lake area.
It's the first H5N1 case that has been found for the past month in Poland,
shortly after a Polish chief veterinary said on Sunday that the country had been
free of the disease since the open of the quarantine zone in the northwest city
of Bydgoszcz, where a bird flu case was found in late March.
Local authorities have disinfection measures taken in the quarantine zone
where fishing is banned. They also dispatched hovercrafts to observe the birds
living there.
Poultry farms near the spot are under surveillance, and farmers there have
been asked to report if there is any sign of bird flu.
