Smoke billows after a fire hits Liaoyuan City's largest hospital in
northeast China's Jilin Province yesterday, killing at least 38 patients.
Rescuers found the remains of 24 victims and 14 others died after they were
transferred to other hospitals. The fire was put out last night, and rescuers
were searching for more victims as investigators sought to determine the cause

The death toll in yesterday's hospital fire in Liaoyuan City of northeast
China's Jilin Province has risen to 38, according to local authorities
today.
Rescuers have found the remains of 24 people at the scene of the fire.
And 14 others succumbed to their injuries after being transferred to other
hospitals, an official said.
All the victims were in-patients of the City
Central Hospital, where the fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday
(previously reported as 5 p.m.).
Rescuers are still searching for other
victims at the scene.
Initial investigation showed the fire started from the
power distribution room, and further investigation is underway.
The hospital
registered a total of 245 in-patients before the fire broke out, and 152 have
been rescued and transferred to other hospitals in the city and in the nearby
county of Tongliao, sources with the hospital said.
