Shanghai Jiao Tong University topped the 29th ACM International
Collegiate Programming Contest, which closed in the city
yesterday. Comprising three undergraduate computer science majors, the Jiao
Tong team named "Spirit," solved eight of the 10 expected computer application
problems, one more than other participating teams, in yesterday's five-hour
final contest. Apart from the gold medal, the team will be awarded US$10,000
bonus by the US Association for Computer Machinery, the organizer of the annual
contest, which has preliminary regional rounds before the finale, this time in
Shanghai. "The final championship was a culmination of our years of hard
work," said Yu Yong, the team coach. It is the second time for Jiao Tong to
top the contest after it became the first Asian university to win the ACM/ICPC
championship in 2002. Moscow State University, St Petersburg Institute of
Fine Mechanics and Optics and University of Waterloo followed Jiao Tong to take
the next three spots by working out seven problems. Altogether 78 teams from
29 countries and regions attended the contest.
