The high-flying housing prices in Shanghai have made it popular for newlyweds
to purchase homes with help from both of their parents, today's Shanghai Evening
Post reported.
Over 80 percent of newlyweds have bought homes with support
from their parents.
Parents of both brides and bridegrooms usually give down
payments for homes for their children, and the newlyweds pay the monthly
mortgage.
Local newlyweds can afford the monthly mortgages, but cannot
afford the down payments which usually account for at least 30 percent of the
price of the home, said an industry analyst.
According to a survey of 147
homes for newlyweds, just over half of the parents pay the down payments, while
one third of the couples pay the down payment themselves.
Zhao Xiaopeng came
to Shanghai with his wife after graduating from non-local universities. The
couple, with a monthly income of between 5,000 and 10,000 yuan (US$602 -
US$1,200), bought a used apartment for 400,000 yuan with 30 percent paid by
their parents as the down payment and the rest paid with mortgages.
Seventy
percent of newlyweds, mainly native Shanghaiese, choose to live with their
parents. Living with parents can save time when doing housework, and parents can
also help raise the children, said a local newlywed, adding that they will buy
home of their own when their can afford to in the future.
