Shanghai plans to complete energy saving renovations on the existing 30
million square meters of residential and public buildings during the 11th Five
Year Plan period (2006-2010).
By 2010, the city's energy consumption is
expected to drop by 20 percent from that in 2005, with 15 percent from
energy-efficient buildings.
Since the city issued regulations on energy
efficient buildings last July 15, Shanghai has established 16 million square
meters of energy efficient residential properties, with 800,000 square meters of
public buildings being constructed.
The energy efficient residential
buildings can save an average of 50 percent of consumed energy, which is around
200 yuan (US$25) for every household per year.
In the coming five years, the
city's 180 million square meters of new residential and public buildings will be
50 percent more energy efficient. Energy saving renovations will be made on 30
million square meters of buildings, including 10 million square meters of
residential buildings.
Solar energy will also be widely used in local
suburbs in the next five years.
