Shanghai residents will have one apartment suite per household and one
room per capita by 2007, according to the Shanghai urban planning department,
the Jiefang Daily reported today. To achieve this purpose, the city plans to
add 90 million square meters of new housing by 2007, about 9,000
hectares. Shanghai will develop residential properties in both urban and
suburban areas, constructing several large-sized residential quarters in
downtown areas and rebuilding old residential areas near the Huangpu River and
Suzhou Creek. To date, Shanghai has boasted total residential housing areas
of 260-270 million square meters, with 20 square meters per capita.
According to the plan, residential floor space is expected to reach 26-27
square meters per capita by 2007. The new residential properties will be
mainly located in three kinds of areas: suburban areas, such as Songjiang new
city, Anting new town and Lingang new city; downtown areas such as new Jiangwan
city in Yangpu District, Zhenxin in Putuo District, Meilong in Minhang District
and Zhangjiang in Pudong District; and old residential quarters near the Huangpu
River and Suzhou Creek, which need reconstruction.
