City to increase low-income housing

Following the city government policy of providing more homes for ordinary residents, the Minhang district government plans to offer more low-priced homes for mid and low-income earners this year, today's Labor Post reported.
There are a great number of families in Shanghai with mid-level incomes who cannot afford to buy property due to the escalating housing prices. Early this year, the Shanghai municipal government was urged to control the land and housing prices in order to provide more affordable housing for ordinary residents.
The home prices will be a bit higher than those for the relocated, but lower than the market prices, according to the Minhang district government.
A total of 350,000 square meters of such properties are expected to be built in the Minhang District, with construction to start by the end of this year.
Shanghai plans to build nine million square meters of properties slated for the relocated this year, with these preparations currently in full swing. The supply of mid and low-priced homes is expected to account for 65 percent of the total supply in the city this year in order to benefit more ordinary families.
