Responding actively to city government efforts to increase the supply of
low-priced housing for average residents, districts and counties in Shanghai
have started choosing locations for the housing projects in their regions.
As
of March 21, the locations of 20 million square meters of budget housing
projects had been decided, meeting the city government's goal for this year.
Of the projects, over 1,300 hectares of land are new housing centers for
residents who have to be relocated from their downtown homes to make way for key
urban infrastructure projects, according to Shanghai Housing, Land and Resource
Administration. Construction has started on these properties for nearly 200
million square meters of the total 1,000-million-square-meter housing spaces
planned for this year.
In addition to suburban districts such as Baoshan,
Jiading, Songjiang, Qingpu, Minhang and Nanhui, downtown districts including
Xuhui, Pudong, Changning, Zhabei, Hongkou and Putuo have responded well and are
offering prime lots for low-priced housing for those who have been
relocated.
Xuhui expects to complete the construction of 310,000 square
meters of housing in eight residential centers this year, and Pudong plans to
start 1.8 million square meters and complete at least 1 million square meters.
Changning promises to build 265,000 square meters and Zhabei will contribute its
Shaoniancun Rd area for budget housing projects.
Besides the housing projects
for relocated families, districts and county are eager to develop their
potentials to increase lower-priced homes with common housing projects to
benefit low-income residents who have not been able to enjoy the housing
reform policy, and have not purchased homes.
For example, Pudong pledges to
provide no less than 1.2 million square meters this year. Baoshan has
decided the locations for 11 land lots with a total low-priced housing space
over 1 million square meters, Nanhui 11 lots with 1 million square meters,
Minhang four lots with 700,000 square meters and Jiading four lots with 600,000
square meters. The downtown district Hongkou said it has also decided on
its lots for low-priced projects.
