Shanghai Unicom, the local branch of China's second largest mobile telecom
operator China United Telecommunications Corp, is building a commercial 3G
telecom network in Shanghai, today's Shanghai Youth Daily reported.
The
company has obtained the approval of its parent company to set up a test network
based on the improved Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 1X technology, the
same report said.
Superior to the existing CDMA1X network, the new
technology enables peak data transfer at 2.4 megabytes per second, which is 15
times faster than CDMA 1X technology and similar to broadband Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology.
According to sources close to the company,
some base stations have been built for the network. The network is
expected to cover the city's downtown and key commercial areas by the end of the
year.
