Nasdaq-listed UTStarcom Inc., a leading telecommunications equipment
manufacturer and supplier of the cordless phone system Little Smart, announced
yesterday that it has landed a US$100 million deal from China's largest telecom
operator and Little Smart operator China Telecommunications Corp, Sina.com
reported.
Under the deal, UTStarcom will provide equipment for China Telecom
to expand their Internet Protocol Little Smart networks in Shanghai and the
provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei, Guangdong, Guagnxi, Fujian and
Yunnan.
Despite a slowdown in the roll-out of China's new Little Smart
networks, the Little Smart market is booming, the US-based company said. It
still regards Little Smart as the best wireless phone technology and a key
contributor to fixed-line telecom operators' revenues.
Citing China Telecom
Authority data, UTStarcom said Little Smart users had increased to 77 million
nationwide by the end of May, recording an average growth rate of 12.5 percent
in the first five months.
The growth of Little Smart business has accounted
for 60 percent of the total growth in China's fixed-line phone
market.
