Telecom sector income up 14%

Six Chinese telecommunications operators report a combined income of 457.6
billion yuan (US$55.3 billion) in 2002, 14 percent over the previous year, the
latest data released by the Ministry of Information Industry
indicated.
China Mobile Communications Corporation is in first place,
reporting 37.4 percent of total income in the telecom operations
industry.
China Telecom Co. and China Netcom Telecommunications Jitong
Corp. follow with 32.5 percent and 16.6 percent respectively.
China
United Communications Co., the only provider of both mobile and fixed telecom
services in China, ranks fourth, contributing 12.1 percent to total telecom
income.
China Railcom Co. and China Telecommunications Satellite Group
Corp share the remaining 1.4 percent.
Optimistic about the telecom market
in the new year, China aims to reach telecom revenues of 506.7 billion yuan in
2003.
It plans to add 330 million more landline phone users and 520
million new mobile phone users.
Fixed assets will remain at around 220
billion yuan, reported homeway.com today, citing the Ministry of Foreign Trade
and Economic Cooperation.
