China's telecom system largest

China has the world's largest modern communications system based on
network scale, technological level and total number of users, according to the
Ministry of Information Industry.
Statistics indicated that the total
number of telephone users in the nation reached 420 million at the end of last
year, with the possession rate up to 33.74 percent.
To date, more than
200 countries and areas have telecom relationships with China, with mobile phone
roaming services covering 120 nations and areas.
Fixed asset investment
in the communications sector amounted to 210.6 billion yuan (US$25.4 billion) by
the end of last year and communications business revenue reached 457.6 billion
yuan, up 14 percent from a year before.
Long-distance transmission and
mobile communications services have been digitized, with network technology up
to top global standards.
China currently has more than 4,400 telecom
companies. China Mobile accounted for 37.4 percent of total telecom revenue at
the end of last year, China Telecom for 32.5 percent, China Netcom for 16.6
percent and China Unicom for 12.1 percent, with the remaining 1.4 percent
claimed by other telecom operators.
