Phone booths to go Shanghai style
29/1/2003 14:54
The Shanghai government will replace 4,000 public phone booths in the
downtown area with a new design in a local style this year, today's eastday.com
reported.
Within three years, the new design will replace all the
existing 8,000 public phone booths in the city.
But local residents must
first select the new design.
Eighteen candidate phone booths will be on
display from February 10 through 14 in the Shanghai Exhibition Hall, and will
provide free service during the local people's representatives congress,
beginning on February 15, said officials with the Shanghai Informatization
Office yesterday.
After trying out the 18 candidates, representatives
will select three finalists, and local residents will then pick the winner by
online voting.
The winning design will be installed on a trial basis on
Nanjing Road E., Huaihai Road M. and in the Xujiahui and Lujiazui
areas.
Officials said the new phone booth will be the city's second
public facility after the East Book Booth which is standardized and unique to
Shanghai.
There are more than 8,000 public phone booths in Shanghai of
more than 10 different designs.
More than 10,000 public phones in local
stores, hotels and airports will also be standardized, according to officials.
They will be replaced with wall-hanging phones sporting a standard
logo.
