ADSL promotions woo new users this month

Shanghai Telecom Co., the local ADSL provider, has recently launched
promotions drastically cutting installation fees for ADSL (asymmetrical digital
subscriber line), a broadband Internet access service.
Under the
promotion for northern districts, including Hongkou, Zhabei, Putuo and Baoshan,
new ADSL customers get a modem free and pay only 310 yuan (US$34) for
installation, less than half the regular fee, the Shanghai Morning Post reported
today.
Offering the free modem, which has a market value of some 300
yuan, effectively reduces the installation fee to almost nothing.
The
promotion ends March 20, when the installation fee goes back up to 630
yuan.
Shanghai Telecom ran a similar promotion in central Shanghai,
according to employees at the company's Jiangxi Road M. outlet.
During
the promotion, which ended last Friday, new ADSL customers got a modem and a
300-yuan pre-paid phone card for free, with an installation fee of 630
yuan.
These promotions have been very successful in attracting dialup
Internet surfers, according to senior officials with 263 Group's Shanghai
branch, a local dialup access provider.
They said most of the company's
best customers, who spend 50+ yuan a month on dialup Internet access, have
switched to Shanghai Telecom's ADSL service.
