28/3/2003 14:56
China United Communications Co. officially launches its nationwide
CDMA 1X network-based data service "U-MAX" today, upgrading its CDMA
(Code-Division Multiple Access) service from second generation to
2.5-generation.
The ultimate goal of China Unicom is to set up
third-generation CDMA service.
The CDMA 1X network is an upgrade of China
Unicom's previous CDMA network, which is essentially a 2G system, enabling it to
support functions which are more competitive with the 2G GSM (global system of
mobile telecommunication) system China Unicom's rivals are operating.
GSM
is now used by most Chinese mobile phone users, telecom experts
said.
"U-MAX" service now includes five features, including interactive
programs, e-mails of 5,000+ Chinese characters and multimedia messaging,
upgraded software downloading, wireless Internet access and
positioning.
The CDMA 1X network has been in service for two months in
Shanghai.
