China Unicom fights back
16/5/2003 15:00
Starting May 19, both GSM and CDMA subscribers with China Unicom's local
unit can receive incoming calls from China Mobile users for a flat 26 yuan
(US$3) monthly fee for 800 minutes in the city, Shanghai Unicom announced
yesterday.
The program will last for one year from June 1 this year to
May 31 next year.
GSM subscribers will pay 26 yuan in additional monthly
fees for receiving incoming calls from China Mobile users for 800 minutes plus a
50-yuan monthly rate for using China Unicom's network, with 0.4 yuan charged for
each additional minute, according to Shanghai Unicom.
Twenty-six yuan for
receiving incoming calls from China Mobile users for 800 minutes will be
deducted from the minimum monthly consumption fees a CDMA subscriber needs to
pay, according to Shanghai Unicom.
The local branch of the country's
second largest mobile communication operator made the move to face head-on
competition with Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Telecom and claim more of the
local mobile communication market, said a spokesman with Shanghai
Unicom.
Shanghai Mobile offered a new policy on April 21 allowing its
Gotone users--whose mobile numbers begin with 135,136,137,138 and 139 and who
receive a monthly bill for services--to receive incoming calls from other China
Mobile users for a flat 25 yuan (US$3) monthly fee for 625
minutes.
Shanghai Telecom has introduced the wireless citywide phone
service Little Smart in the city, targeting the low-end mobile communication
market.
