Telephone booths upgraded
26/6/2003 15:02
Sample 'second generation' telephone booths have been scattered throughout
busy local streets recently for public evaluation.
If they are a hit, a
first batch of 4,000 will replace first generation booths by year's
end.
The upgraded booths have more functions than the current ones, such
as online chatting, an electric fan, a writing surface for taking notes, a place
to put your belongings and something to lean on.
The new booths, made of
reinforced glass, come in three colors, red, brown and grey. An improved
structure in the lower part of the booth intensifies resistance to outside
forces and enhances ventilation.
The first batch of 4,000 replacements
will all be located within the inner ring road, while another 2,000 new booths
are expected to be placed between the inner and outer ring roads by 2005 to
achieve step by step the goal of revamping and more than doubling Shanghai's
current 8,000 telephone booths by 2007.
