Chinese mobile phone outputs reached 130 million last year, accounting
for 31 percent of the total handset production worldwide, with the two figures
increasing by 122 million and 26.4 percentage points respectively from the year
1998, according to the Ministry of Information Industry. China has become the
world's largest mobile communications manufacturing base, with domestic handset
brands boasting growing presence in the market, said an official with the
ministry. The domestic handset production industry has contributed more to
the nation's information industry development, with mobile communications and
related manufacturing sectors attracting a total foreign investment of more than
US$10 billion to date. Domestic mobile phone makers have made a large
improvement in technological standard, with some necessary apparatuses reaching
the international level, the official said. The Chinese mobile communications
manufacturing industry is expected to become a high-tech industry with rapid
technological development and great market potential in the coming five years,
he said. China will also become a global center for the development,
production and sales of mobile communications products in five years, he
added.
