Top mobile phone sellers unveiled

Nokia, Motorola, Bird, TCL and Siemens have ranked the top five mobile
phone sellers in China in the first half of this year, today's South Daily
reported. During this period, China has output 82 million handsets (including
GSM, GPRS and CDMA phones) and sold 80 million, the same report said citing data
from the Ministry of Information Industry, China's authority of the telecom
sector. Of the phones sold, nearly half, or 37 million, were exported to
other countries and areas. With the market enlarging, competition in the
country's mobile phone sector has been stiffer as a result of the rising
manufacturers and output, analysts said. By the end of last year, 37 domestic
phone makers were competing in China with a yearly output capacity totaling 200
million units, while the domestic demand remained at 60 million. China's lack
of core technologies in handset manufacturing and its high reliance on overseas
technologies have also set an obstacle for development of the domestic phone
makers, analysts pointed out. They advised the Chinese manufacturers to turn
to overseas market for export to boost sales.
