China Netcom taps local landline market

Shanghai residents will have one more option when installing
fixed-line phones at home, as the China Netcom, China's second largest
fixed-line operator after China Telecom, began to tap the local landline market,
the Youth Post reported today. China Telecom signed interconnection agreement
with China Netcom on December 13, with network interconnection realized between
local units of the two operators on February 26 this year. "We target
corporate clients currently and expect to tap the whole local fixed-line market
in the near future," said the spokesman with Shanghai Netcom. Shanghai Netcom
was granted operation right of the local fixed-line network by the Shanghai
Communications Administration in March this year and has already solved the
interconnection problem with Shanghai Telecom, so it has no legal or
technological problems in penetrating into the local landline market, said an
industry analyst. The China Netcom will not establish special communications
company in Shanghai, and the Shanghai Netcom will run all the landline
businesses in the city, including local call business. The city is expected
to have three fixed-line operators in the near future, including Shanghai
Telecom, Shanghai Netcom and Shanghai Railcom, the analyst said.
