China's users of Little Smart have hit 15 million, setting a milestone for
the cordless phone industry, US-based UTStarcom Corporation announced
yesterday. In August, 1.5 million new users were registered nationwide, the
company said. In the first half of the year, more than 40 percent of the
country's new landline phone users registered for the Little Smart service. He
expected users of Little Smart to reach 30 million by year's end, nearly
doubling the 12 million of a year ago.
UTStarcom, the first
telecommunications company to introduce the citywide wireless phone system into
China, has about 60 percent of the market. In 1999, when the system first
entered China, there were a mere 4,000 users across the nation.
Charging
the rates of landline phones, Little Smart enables mobile communications within
a small area.
"The sharp growth of Little Smart users indicates a surging
demand for a convenient, efficient yet affordable cordless telecom solution in
the country," said Wu Ying, chief executive officer of
UTStarcom. "Because it has proven to be the most efficient and profitable
telecom service, we believe China Telecom and China Netcom, the key providers
of Little Smart in China, will continue the expansion strategy of the Little
Smart network," he added. Pleased with the growth of cordless service in
China, the CEO forecast "the big success of Little Smart in China will be copied
in many other countries".
