Unicom phone purchase deals
8/10/2003 15:06

China United Telecommunications Corp., the country's only CDMA operator, has announced a plan to make another mobile phone purchase for 1.5 billion yuan (US$181 million) to promote its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) service.
According to A China Economic Times report, the company will buy 1 million phones at an average price of around 1,500 yuan from six CDMA phone makers.
The models include Motorola V730, ZTE C900, Kyocera KZ820, Haier S2000, Daxian C318 and TCL 1888.
China Unicom will manage to reduce the market prices of these phones through the massive purchase and provide phones at affordable prices to draw more CDMA users.
This is part of its program to promote the high-end CDMA business on the recently upgraded CDMA 1X network.
On the platform of this network, the high-speed download of pictures and rings, news reading, stock market reporting and other interactive services will be available.
Bulk phone purchase has become the usual strategy of China Unicom to boost its CDMA business by drastically reducing the prices of high-end phones.
In June, it spent 700 million yuan to buy 500,000 ZTE and Hisense phones to help promote its lower-end CDMA business Ruyi133, which was unveiled the following month.
In August, it spent 200 million yuan to purchase 200,000 Nokia phones.
