Telecom operators crowding net-bar sector
30/10/2003 15:10

Shanghai Unicom will open its first net cafes in the city next week after its parent company, China Unicom, was given a nationwide business license for chain net bar operations two days ago, the Shanghai Evening News reported today.
It is the first such business license issued by the Ministry of Culture, which is promising to issue ten of its kind in the near future.
China Unicom's net bars will offer the public Internet access, IP phones, broadband and online game services.
Before China Unicom, the country's second-largest telecom operator, was given a license, Shanghai Telecom had been granted a citywide business license for net bar operations.
Shanghai Telecom has already opened 30 chain net bars in the city, with the number expected to reach 100 by the end of the year.
Besides launching net cafe franchises, Shanghai Telecom will open a large flagship net bar in local downtown areas.
"Launching net bar businesses can enhance our valued-added telecom services," said a spokesman with Shanghai Telecom.
