Telecom giants target local elderly

The Shanghai Unicom offered a handset card service specifically for
local senior citizens, through which they can enjoy cheaper telecom services and
ask for help during emergencies, the Shanghai Morning Post reported
today. With such tailor-made mobile phone card, local elderly people may pay
less for making phone calls, and when they encounter emergencies such as feeling
sick, they can press the 'help' key on their handsets to ask for help. After
receiving the 'help' signal, the system will adopt positioning function to
display where the elderly are located and offer help through the local '120' and
'110' network. According to the Shanghai Unicom, the monthly rental of such
card is 30 yuan (US$3.6), covering 60-minute local calling fees and 15 yuan of
function charges. Only 0.28 yuan is charged for each additional minute for
dialing. The Shanghai Mobile is also considering providing handset services
for senior citizens. "Senior citizens are undoubtedly potential customers,
and telecom operators' new services can meet their special demand," said an
industry analyst.
