Shanghai residents with Little Smart cordless phones will feel excited
to learn that they can send and receive short messages to and from all the other
mobile phone users, according to the Shanghai Telecom yesterday, eastday.com
reported. Previously, Little Smart users could only send short messages
between each other, but cannot send to other cell phone users. There are no
technical barriers in the program between Little Smart and common handset users,
and the Shanghai Telecom is currently busy making preparations for the network
upgrades, said the spokesman with the Shanghai Telecom. Shanghai has been
listed as one of the two cities in China to launch the program on a trial basis,
and after the China Telecom reaches cooperative agreements with other mobile
communications operators such as China Mobile in payment settlement and
management, local Little Smart users can send and receive short messages to and
from all the other handset users, the spokesman pointed out. If the program
is successful, the China Telecom and China Netcom will be the largest
beneficiaries in their Little Smart cordless services, said an industry analyst,
adding that the new program will provide more room for the development of the
services. The domestic short message market has grown fast over the past
several years, with its total market values exceeding 6.2 billion yuan (US$750
million) last year, surging more than three times from a year before.
