Huawei to unveil new Little Smart phones

China's largest telecommunications equipment supplier, Shenzhen Huawei
Technologies Co Ltd, will market 12 new phone models for Little Smart service by
July, today's Beijing Morning Post reported. The new models, in all price
ranges, will be more functional, reasonably priced and attractive, according to
Huawei officials in handset division. After its formal entry into China a
year ago, Little Smart has experienced rapid growth because it falls under the
land service category and allows mobile telecom at much lower costs than mobile
service. A late player in the mobile phone area, Huawei began Little Smart
handset production only late last year. Before that, ZTE Corp, UTStarcom Inc and
Lucent Technologies had shared the market. They are now Huawei's key rivals.
Despite that, Huawei seems confident about its entry. "It's never too late to
enter the market", said Xu Zhijun, Huawei wireless product president, adding
that "The point is that you should seize the opportunity." Having assmbled
more than 300 research and development staff to develop Little Smart phones,
Huawei reportedly will invest 1 billion yuan to tap into the business. By mid
March, it had sold 600,000 of the cordless phones.
