Chinese handset users soaring

The robust national economy has boosted the development of domestic mobile
communications industry, with the number of Chinese handset users topping 300
million by the end of May this year, the Beijing Youth Post reported
today. According to the Ministry of Information Industry yesterday, by the
end of last month, the number of Chinese fixed-line phone users hit 290.401
million, with more than 30 percent in suburban areas. There is a growing
demand for mobile phones, with the number of Chinese handset users exceeding
that of landline phone users for the first time in October last year. There
were only more than 700 handset users in 1987 when the first set of mobile
communications facilities was introduced to China. It took ten years for the
number to soar from 700 to 10 million and only less than four years to jump from
10 million to 100 million.
