Spreadtrum
Communications Inc., a leading US-based provider of wireless Integrated Circuits
(IC) software solutions, announced yesterday in Beijing that it has developed a
dual-model chip for cellular phones which meets with China's third-generation
telecom standards, the Beijing Times reported. The chip, which enables phone
users to smoothly switch between telecom networks TD-SCDMA and GSM, will be
unveiled this Sunday at an exhibition held by the Ministry of the
Information. TD-SCDMA stands for Time Division - Synchronized Code Division
Multiple Access, a China-developed 3G standard, and GSM for theGlobal System for
Mobile Communication, a 2G standard currently widely applied. With full a
China-patent, the chip is likely help cut the prices of China's 3G phones down
to around 2,000 yuan (US$242) from the current 7,000 yuan, according to Wu Ping,
Spreadtrum's chief executive officer. He said the company has started to
supply the chip to phone manufacturers Amoi, Bird and Hisense for their
development of 3G phones. Spreadtrum will begin massive production of the
chip before the year's end, he noted. Also yesterday, Datang Telecom
Technology and Industry Group, China's leading telecom developer and developer
of the TD-SCDMA standard, announced the completion of its development of a 3G
phone chip. Sample 3G phones inserted with this chip are expected to be
unveiled at the end of this year, according to the
company.
