Taiwan-based
Compal Electronics Inc. yesterday officially opened its phone plant in Nanjing,
Jiangsu Province, the Sina.com reported. With all three production lines in
operation next year, the plant's monthly production capacity is expected to
reach 6 million phones, the biggest in East China. At that time, the
production cost for each phone will be lowered to around 60 yuan (US$7.3),
industry insiders estimated. Compal's partner Motorola Inc. seems confident
in the new plant. At yesterday's opening ceremony, Mike Sudol, Motorola's senior
supervisor with the personal telecommunications department, said, "our
cooperation with Compal is promising." In a trial production last month, the
Nanjing plant produced 1 million phones for Motorola. Compal became
Motorola's original equipment manufacturer for the Asian market nearly four
years ago and has expanded to its global OEM supplier one year
ago.
