IBM recently issued a new type of search engine, dubbed UIMA for Unstructured
Information Management Architecture, with which they hope to dominate the
third-generation search engine market, reported yesterday's Oriental Morning
Post.
Statistics by the International Data Corporation show that the search
engine market for enterprises in 2003 generated US$620 million, up by
20%. The massive commercial potential in this market has not only
created "Google", a global miracle, but has attracted Microsoft and Yahoo
as well.
Jennifer, general manager with the IBM information management group,
claims that their new system is able to decode the underlying significance of
messages in whatever forms, including video, picture or mail. "We plan to
promote another new search engine within two years," she added.
However,
"Suggest", the latest search technology developed by Google, and a desktop seach
engine by Microsoft will be the most competitive rivals for IBM.
