China's largest telecommunications equipment developer and supplier Huawei
Technologies Co Ltd has finally beaten its key rivals Motorola and Ericsson to
secure a US$186 million valued 3G mobile network expansion contract from
Thailand's state-owned CAT Telecom, today's Eastday.com reported. CAT Telecom
revealed the final result on Monday following the announcement last Wednesday
that consortiums led by Motorola, Huawei technologies and Ericsson had been
short listed as qualified bidders on technical grounds for its CDMA (Code
Division Multiple Access) network expansion project. The other Chinese
telecom firm, ZTE Corp, as well as other bidders like Jasmine and Italian-Thai
Development PCL failed to meet requirements. In the final round, Huawei gave
the highest technological performance, according to insiders. Its bid,
reportedly 7.2 billion baht (US$180 million), is 46 percent lower than the base
price, also the lowest among the final trio. The contract is to help
CAT Telecom to upgrade its existing CDMA network to a capacity of 2.3 million
users. Currently, the telecom operator has built a CDMA network across 25
Thai provinces and covered 1 million users. Hailing the successful bid,
Huawei regarded it another step forward to realizing its ambition for the
overseas market. Its overseas revenue soared 117 percent year-on-year to hit
US$2.28 billion last year, which has pushed up its 2004 revenue to jump 45
percent year-on-year to US$5.58 billion, the company said.
Huawei Technologies expects to quadruple the annual overseas revenue to
US$10 billion by 2008 through expansion and acquisitions.
