The Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation Group held a technology and
research meeting on Monday to review its cooperation with local university labs
on studies of new energy applications for automobiles.
As planned, it will
produce small quantities of hybrid cars by 2008 and 50,000 per year by 2010. It
will also be able to produce 1,000 buses per year by then, which will run on
both hybrid energy and alternative energy. Cars run on fuel cells are expected
to reach the market for a trial commercialization by 2010.
Recently, SAIC has
commenced a series of associated projects, including the tie-up with Volkswagen
AG and GM on hybrid cars and the signing of cooperation agreements with Jiaotong
and Tongji Universities, to gradually develop prototypes of hybrid cars into
commercial production.
