The growing number of foreign cars manufactured domestically poses a threat
to imported car sales, eastday.com reported today.
More than 10 million
Toyota Camry models had been sold worldwide by September of this year, but its
sales in China for the first nine months of the year were only 9,887, less than
half of last year's 22,790.
The news that the Camry would be produced
domestically from next year has had a negative influence on the sales of the
imported model, said Xu Changming, director of the Economic Consultancy Center
of the State Information Center.
The Nissan Cefiro saw its sales in China
plunge from 10,128 last year to 1,410 so far this year since the
domestically-produced substitute, the Teana, became available.
Some
auto-makers even stopped importing the models now produced domestically.
"However, it doesn't mean that imported cars have a bleak future. They are
complementary to domestically-produced cars," said Shen Weijie, a dealer.
Imported cars have different target markets than domestic ones. Consumers
usually buy imported ones as their second car and are focusing more on
what the cars say about their drivers. Therefore, imported cars have great
potential in the future, he stressed.
