One third of the vehicles in Shanghai are private cars, and one out of
eight Shanghainese has a driving license, as the numbers of privately owned cars
in Shanghai shot up last year to a record high of nearly 60,000, today's
International Finance News reported.
Citing data from the local vehicle
administrative authority, the report said an additional 142,801 private cars
were registered during the past year, and 213,506 locals got driving
licenses.
By the end of 2002, 1.4 million automobiles were on Shanghai
roads, and 1.9 million licensed drivers were behind the wheel, according to the
data.
