Holiday boosts car rental market
21/1/2003 15:27

More Shanghainese plan to lease a car for the coming Spring Festival holiday, with car rental demand twice as high as supply, eastday.com reported today.

Local car rentals began to heat up last year, especially during weeklong holidays such as Spring Festival, Labor Day and National Day.

All of the 1,000 plus cars in their inventory are leased out for the holidays, said a spokesman with the Shanghai Anji Car Rental Co, the largest car rental company in the city.

Currently more than 3,000 cars are available for rent in Shanghai, about half of market demand, a market analyst estimated.

Rental prices won't go up over the holiday, and numerous discounts are on offer, announced several local companies. Rates are 300+ yuan per day, with 10-percent discounts for periods over three days.

People are opting to lease luxury cars for their status value. There is not a large rate difference between high and low-end cars.
