Car imports soaring this year

Shanghai's car imports have maintained rapid growth in the first five
months of the year, with 5,837 sedans imported to the Shanghai Port during the
five months, an increase of 93.5 percent from a year before, eastday.com
reported today.
According to statistics, sedans valued at US$2.0151
trillion were imported to the city from January to May this year, mainly mid and
high-end products with engine capacity of more than 1,500 milliliters,
accounting for 98.1 percent of total imports.
Japan and Germany are
China's main trade partners for car imports, with the number of sedans imported
from the two nations to Shanghai covering 78.04 percent of the total imports
from January to May this year.
According to statistics, 2,079 Japan-made
sedans were imported to Shanghai in the first five months of the year, an
increase of 36.8 percent from a year before, and 2,479 German-made sedans were
imported to the city, up 1.6 times from the previous year.
Only 906 cars
were imported to the city last month due to the SARS outbreak, the lowest over
the past five months.
