Beijing universities build garages for students
12/8/2003 15:31

The growing number of undergraduates buying cars has encouraged universities in Beijing to build underground garages, eastday.com reported today.
The College of Business with the Beijing Union University plans to construct an underground garage for 200 cars, and Beijing University established an underground garage for each apartment building of post-graduates, each holds 45 cars.
The number of motor vehicles exceeded two million in Beijing to date, with 1.28 million private vehicles, or 64 percent of the total, according to statistics.
More young people, especially university students buy cars nowadays, and there is no ban from universities that prevent students from driving their cars to campus, said Li Jingli, general manager with the Beijing North Vehicle Distributing Market.
A growing number of university teachers currently purchase cars, with some 25 percent of teachers in a Beijing local university owning cars.
However, there are no large-size parking lots in the university campus, so students or teachers have to park their cars before the class buildings or near the avenues.
"We build garages for the conveniences of both teachers and students, as we cannot keep those driving their own cars away from the campus," said Prof. Sun Ming, director with the College of Business with the Beijing Union University.
