Local cell to power Beijing Olympics
17/11/2003 15:47

A locally developed eco-friendly automobile power system based on fuel cells will help Beijing to create a clean environment during the Beijing Olympics, as it's been selected by Tsinghua University for the capital's fuel cell bus development.
The first batch of the so-called "green-hearted" buses are expected to hit the Beijing roads in 2008.
According to Shanghai Shen-Li High-Tech Company Ltd., developer of the fuel cells, the clean power vehicle is one of the largest projects of the 863 Program, a national high-tech development program. Shanghai is undertaking the sedan section, while Beijing is handling the buses. After the sample Santana 2000 sedan equipped with this power system passed appraisal this August, Shen-Li's cell development for cars has achieved substantial progress
Its success has spread to its bus power system, which has won praise from the Beijing bus developer, Tsinghua, after the test bus powered by Shen-Li cells had successfully driven 1,000-plus kilometers in the capital.
The bus fuel cell, weighing about 600 kilograms, is 20 percent lighter than the existing auto power systems.
