More Beijing families have second car

About 13 percent of families in Beijing have a second car, top among the
nation, the Beijing Evening News reported, citing data from Beiya Auto Market in
the capital. Data indicates 4,546 cars were sold in January in Beiya, similar
to the same period a year ago. With domestically made vehicles dominating the
trade, FAW Volkswagen's Jetta car tops the sale with a volume of 591. The
following four best sellers are Chang'an Suzuki's Antelope, Tianjin Xiali's
Charade, FAW VW's Bora and Cherry's QQ. More than 90 percent of the car
buyers are individuals. Data also indicates increasing families in Beijing
are considering buying a second vehicle. Unlikely Western countries, where
people usually choose a sports utility vehicle (SUV) for the second car, auto
buyers in the capital seem more interested in sedans. Explaining for the
discrepancy, experts pointed out that's because many of Chinese couples have
careers of their own and they will mainly use the second vehicle for driving to
work. Imported automobiles seem decreasingly popular among domestic buyers,
as sales of imports at the Beiya market has halved to about 8 percent of the
total from 16.3 percent of 2001. Cheap and convenient maintenances as well as
competitive prices and advancing technologies have made domestic vehicles more
attractive, experts said.
