Outside cars threaten traffic
25/2/2004 15:50

A growing number of car owners in Shanghai purchasing license plates outside the city have put pressure on local traffic, said Shanghai government spokesman Jiao Yang at a press conference yesterday.
The local transportation department is making surveys and statistics on such cars, Jiao said.
According to the vehicle management department of Suzhou, in Zhejiang Province, more than 8,000 Shanghai vehicles have had license plates in Suzhou, Taicang and Kunshan to date.
The local transportation department will enhance management and guidance to ease the pressures on traffic, Jiao said.
Local individuals and private firms have to bid for car license plates as part of the government move to limit the number of vehicles on local streets.
