Shanghai will develop its own automobiles, and plans to produce 50,000 such cars by 2007, a senior official with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp's auto engineering institution.
March 11, at a session during the ongoing China Automotive Industry Roundtable the official said his company has set up a work group to develop the Shanghai-patented car. The group's Shanghai Automotive Co Ltd. will handle the development and its Yizheng production center will manufacture the vehicle.
Analysts expect SAIC will tap the new models from lower-range products, such as economy cars, referring to the company's technology and the existing auto market.
Currently, all the automobiles produced in Shanghai are imported models.
