Car dealers bet on holiday

Local car dealers are gearing up for the upcoming May Day holiday with
various promotional strategies to boost sales, the Shanghai Morning Post
reported today. "April should have been the first peak sales period of this
year, but on the contrary, sales volumes this month have declined by around 20
percent from the previous month," said a spokesman with a local car dealership.
The sluggish car sales this month were caused by the complicated and
confusing future of the local license-plate auction policy and continuous car
price cuts, the spokesman pointed out. The National Development and Reform
Commission has stipulated that local governments are not allowed to auction car
license plates. The requirement has cast a shadow on the local auction policy,
so many locals are hesitant to purchase cars for the time being, he said. As
of March, price cuts were offered on nearly ten car models, with all the car
manufacturers targeting the weeklong May Day holiday. Betting on a growing
number of visitors to the city, car markers are planning to hold exhibitions to
fuel the local car market. The Shanghai Yongda Group announced yesterday
plans to hold car exhibitions at the Jinjiang Park, with domestically produced
BMW318i sedans and many Shanghai-brand antique sedans with historic values
available at the show.
