U.S. automobile giant General Motors Corporation's Shanghai joint venture
will unveil a new upscale Buick sedan this Friday, the Sina.com reported.
The
new model, called Royaum, will be based on the Statesman, a flagship luxury
model by Australia's largest auto manufacturer, Holden Ltd. The information was
contained in a report citing sources close to Shanghai General Motors Corp, a
50-50 joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation
Group (SAIC). Holden is a subsidiary of GM Australia.
The Chinese name
of the new model will be "Rongyu" as pronounced in Chinese.
The new model,
targeting such high-end customers as senior business people and politicians,
will be positioned between Cadillac and Regal, the other two models of Shanghai
GM's Buick series. Cadillac is intended for the luxury market while Regal
is for mid-market consumers.
Royaum will be a key rival for the Audi
A6. The latter, which currently dominates China's high-end auto market, is
produced by First Automotive Works Corp, China's flagship automaker.
While
expanding production lines of Buicks to cover the high, mid and low end sedan
markets, Shanghai GM will pin its hopes on Chevrolet in the compact car
sector.
Company sources said GM will extend its product line for the
lower-end market by positioning the Chevrolet series above the economy auto
Sail.
