Shanghai magnet for job-hunters from Taiwan
14/1/2003 16:01

A growing number of Taiwanese job-hunters are setting their sights on the Chinese mainland--as many as 15,000 last year, up 40 percent from the year before. Shanghai is their number one choice, followed by Shenzhen, Beijing, Dongwan, Suzhou, Guangzhou and Xiamen, the Youth Post reported today.

Taiwanese employees between 25 and 35 mainly occupy mid-level posts here, and they generally make only 1.5 times that of local staff. Incomes for those just joining the work force are nearly equal to local levels.

"I am just doing sales, and many friends of mine from Taiwan are doing very ordinary jobs here," said Zhang Zicheng, a salesperson with a Taiwan-based wedding firm in Shanghai. "But we want to come to Shanghai, and we care more about our future development than we do about the position or pay," Zhang said. "My work experience here will be a treasure for my future," he added.

With the opening of the domestic service sector, more foreign investors want to tap the mainland market, so highly-qualified people from Taiwan are really in demand, Zhang said.

Increased numbers of young Taiwanese are adapting to the times by doing post-graduate study on the mainland, and more of them are entering the retail sector here after graduation.
