Local youth drawn by higher pay overseas
21/2/2003 16:02

Young people in Shanghai are showing rising interest in working overseas, even in low-level positions, because of higher pay, according to today's Youth Daily.

More than 70 candidates from the city and its neighboring areas are vying for 10 positions offered by the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Singapore.

About one-third of the competitors are Shanghainese, according to Wang Xueqing, international labor department manager of China Star Corp. for the Shanghai branch of International Economic & Technologic Cooperation.

With four years of experience recruiting employees in China for five-star Singaporean hotels, the company is helping Ritz Carlton, a six-star hotel, recruit 10 staff members in China.

It recruits some 300 people each year for Singaporean hotels, according to Wang.

The manager is surprised by the level of interest shown by local young people in overseas jobs.

He said it's the company's first hotel recruitment in Shanghai. Previously, it looked for candidates in the city's neighboring areas such as Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.

"These hotel jobs are usually lower-level service positions, and many locals won't consider that type of work," he said.

"Most parents don't want their children, mostly only children, to do this type of labor, but that's changing," he said.

Pay is the key factor, he noted.

The minimum pay offered by luxury Singaporean hotels is around 4,000 yuan (US$500) a month, excluding tips.

Candidates for these positions must be younger than 26 years old.
