Job-hunters lower salary requirements

Many job seekers in the city are drastically lowering their salary
requirements in a bid to survive in the tough labor market, unwittingly damaging
their credibility in the eyes of some employers, the Shanghai Morning Post
reported today.
While previously job hunters were going for high pay
above all else, now they seem to be going to the other extreme.
A
returned student from Australia applied for a receptionist job with a local
hotel, which only required a high school degree. Her salary requirement was very
low but, contrary to expectations, she didn't get the job.
"We don't dare
hire such people, because they may change jobs after less than three months,
which would be a loss to us," said the human resources manager of the hotel, who
added that such a low salary requirement indicates a lack of
confidence.
Many university graduates are only asking for 600-700 yuan
(US$72-US$84) a month. Xu, a graduate from a well-known university in Shanghai,
asked for 600 yuan a month for a sales position but was rejected. "If he lacks
the courage to promote himself, how can he communicate with clients?" said the
recruiter.
A very low salary requirement creates doubts about a
candidate's capability, said a human resources expert.
