Heavy job cuts in Beijing this year
25/2/2003 16:02

Some 436,000 employees in Beijing will be laid off this year, with the manufacturing industry the hardest hit, according to the Beijing Statistics Bureau.

The Beijing manufacturing industry is predicted to cut 45,000 staff members this year, as 48 percent of manufacturing companies reported a loss.

Some 5,000-10,000 job cuts are expected in the transportation, storage and postal service industries this year, and 9,000 are expected in the wholesale, retail trade and food sectors.

Advanced technologies and increased management experience are cited as the main reasons for the job cuts, said an industry analyst.

The social service sector is expected to add some 39,000 jobs this year, more than all other industries. State Party organs, social communities, educational, cultural, film and television units and financial insurance sectors will also add jobs this year.

A total of 445,000 people will be recruited in Beijing this year, for a net increase of 10,000 after layoffs.

The Beijing labor market remains very tough this year, said the analyst.
