Most Taiwanese willing to work on mainland
10/4/2003 16:04

More than 60 percent of Taiwanese are willing to work on the Chinese mainland, with Shanghai their top choice, according to a survey by a large human resources website in Taiwan.

Shenzhen, Beijing, Dongwan, Suzhou, Guangzhou and Xiamen follow Shanghai as work locations favored by Taiwanese, according to the survey.

Highly qualified people with technological, management and system planning capabilities are in great need on the Chinese mainland, said a human resources expert in Taiwan.

Nearly 40 percent of mainland labor market demand for Taiwanese is for people with degrees in science and engineering, and less than 10 percent for liberal arts and law majors, the expert said.

Nearly 44 percent of the demand is for people with bachelor's degrees, nearly 30 percent for people with associate's degree and less than 20 percent for people with at least a master's degree, the expert added.

Starting in 2001, workers with management talent and sales experience will be in great demand on the mainland, with less demand for people in consulting or electrical engineering.

More mainland cities such as Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing have offered preferential policies for overseas talents, so competition for human resources in those cities is getting much tougher, said an industry analyst.

Taiwanese wishing to work on the Chinese mainland should find out if they meet labor market requirements and be well prepared before they go, the analyst suggested.
