Employees should be cautious about changing jobs
15/5/2003 16:05

Employees from SARS-hit sectors should think twice before changing jobs, said a professional consultant, the Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

A small portion of employees in some well-known local travel agencies are ready to resign.

"This should have been the yearly peak season for travel agencies but SARS has slashed our business," said a tour guide.

"I began to hunt for jobs after the Labor Day holiday, but not many jobs suit me," said an employee of a big local travel agency, surnamed Sun. "Most resumes I sent got no reply," Sun said.

There are three reasons why employees shouldn't change jobs under such circumstances, said the consultant.

*The business slump in SARS-hit sectors is temporary and doesn't mean such jobs will not have a bright future.
*Hopping to another industry will interrupt a person's professional development plan, which can be risky.
*Many enterprises have suspended recruitment plans due to SARS, intensifying the competition in the local labor market.

A person's career development plan should guide their decision to change jobs, not temporary difficulties experienced by their company, especially when it comes to professionals with bright development prospects, said a consultant with the Career Consultants Co. Ltd.

Employees should take the opportunity to improve themselves while resting at home in order to pave the way for future development, the consultant suggested.
