Labor market hit by SARS
26/5/2003 16:05
The market demand for workers sharply declined in Shanghai starting in
mid April, while the number of job hunters increased, as a result of the SARS
outbreak, the Shanghai Evening Post reported today.
The top five
industries in Shanghai with the largest number of recruited and laid-off workers
from January to April were the manufacturing industry, social service industry,
restaurant industry, real estate sector and transportation sector, according to
the Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau.
The number of jobs
increased by 138,700 in the first four months of the year, but the market demand
fell short of supply starting in mid April due to the SARS
outbreak.
However, SARS created many job opportunities for laid-off
people and those relying on government subsidies, said the spokesman with the
Shanghai Labor and Social Security Bureau.
To date, the city has
established 204 service agencies related to SARS disinfection, with 7,317
employees. The number is expected to reach more than 10,000 in the near future,
according to the bureau.
There have been more than 13,000 jobs on the
city's recruitment website specifically for professionals every day since the
site's launch over a month ago, with one-third of jobs paying more than 3,000
yuan (US$361) a month and many paying more than 8,000 yuan.
More than 300
people have found jobs to date through the website, according to
statistics.
